Understanding NASTF "Codes" and Related Services
If you're new to NASTF, you may hear people talk about "codes." This guide will help you understand the different types of "codes" and the services they refer to.
Key Codes (Key Cut Codes)
A key cut code is a numeric pattern used to laser-cut an ignition key. Only Vehicle Security Professionals (VSPs) can access these codes. VSPs receive a unique ID (VSP ID), enabling unlimited key code requests.
Cost: $435 for a 2-year subscription
Processing Time: Up to 2 weeks
Requirement: Certificate of Insurance must be emailed by your insurance provider to COI@nastf.org
Immobilizer Codes
When certain security-related auto parts like the ECM or BCM are replaced, the vehicle must be reprogrammed to recognize them. NASTF's AIR (Automotive Immobilizer Reprogramming) program lets approved technicians request remote reprogramming support without needing full VSP credentials.
Note: The AIR program cannot be used for key codes or key programming.
AIR Technician Registration
Complete a free 5-minute application (approval in ~24 hours)
Cost: Free to register
Submitting an AIR Request
After completing AIR Technician Registration, upon approval, you will be able to submit AIR Requests.
Cost: $45 per request (plus remote Service Provider's fees)
AIR Request Process and Remote Session Details
Once your AIR Request is approved, the selected Service Provider will contact you to schedule the remote support session. Their contact information will also be shared, allowing you to follow up directly to confirm receipt and help expedite scheduling. The duration and method of the remote session depend on several factors:
The reprogramming tool you have
The vehicle’s year, make, and model
The type of security service being performed
The Service Provider’s process, which may include:
Providing verbal instructions for manual entry
Remotely connecting to your tool and completing the task on your behalf
Scan Tool Codes
Some diagnostic tools request a “code” which refers to your VSP ID. VSP registration is required to access these functions.

Diagnostic Tool Codes
NASTF is launching a pilot program with OEMs in 2025 to provide access to diagnostic tool codes. Check back for updates.
